With dropping temperatures our skin dries up quicker than in summer. Personally, my skin tends to dryness by autumn, therefore a good nourishing body lotion is a must for me. There are many reasons for dry skin. According to Ayurveda, winter and autumn is Vata time and the tendency is towards dry and cold humors. Our skin reflects the state of our health, weather conditions. Additional factors include digestion and your body humor combination.
WHY I STARTED MAKING MY OWN COSMETICS ?

The first reason why I started making my own creams and potions was to avoid harmful substances.
Commercial cosmetics are usually laden with chemicals and preservatives which are harmful. Many of them contain hormone disrupters, like Parabenes, paraffin, ETDA to name a few. These chemicals enhance the shelf life but mimic Estrogen causing many endocrine and reproductive issues. Some of them are also carcinogenic. Since many years, I have been using only natural, organic and chemical free cosmetics. My daughter’s skin reacts immediately to any kind of disturbance due to her Eczema. She is extremely sensitive to toxins, gluten and diary too. Therefore, I was determined to have only all natural and homemade stuff for my family.
Another reason was to omit all those plastics and packaging.
The third reason was to cut costs.
High quality natural body lotions are very expensive in Switzerland. Of late I have to be very cost conscious due to our changing lifestyle and finances. Expensive body lotions are a luxury and we have to dig deep into our pockets.

INGREDIENTS FOR WHIPPED BODY BUTTER
Our skin is the biggest organ of our body and it absorbs everything we put on it. For this reason, you will be better off using only all natural ingredients for your body butter.
Cocoa butter has a delicious chocolate smell and we all love chocolate surely. Lavender and Sandal wood oil will pair well with this combination.
TIPS FOR YOUR HOMEMADE WHIPPED BODY BUTTER
- Even if you don’t have the exact right measurements don’t worry, the recipe will still work.
- You don’t need to refrigerate the body butter. Keep the body butter in airtight jars.
- You can easily increase the quantity of ingredients but stick to the measurements.
- This body butter can be your ideal Christmas gift item for all your natural loving friends.
- Be careful of using citrus essential oils. Citrus essential oils are photosensitive to your skin. So if you use them don’t go out in the sun, but you can still use the body butter at home.
- You can use any essential oil of your choice.

HOW TO MAKE DIY WHIPPED BODY BUTTER
INGREDIENTS
- Cocoa Butter -1 /2 cup
- Shea Butter – 1/2 cup
- Coconut Oil – 1/2 cup
- Jojoba Oil ( or Olive Oil) – 1/2 cup
- 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E Oil (optional)
- 3 tablespoons of German Chamomile Hydrosol (optional)
- 2 – 3 teaspoons of arrowroot powder (optional if you want a non-greasy body butter)
- 40 drops of Essential oils (20 each of Lavender and Sandalwood)
- Sterilized glass jars with a wide mouth.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Melt the coconut oil, cocoa butter and shea butter in a double boiler. I usually use a glass bowl over a pot of boiling water because I have no double boiler.
- Add in the Jojoba oil and mix well into the melted fats.

- Keep the liquid in the freezer until it is firm. You don’t want it to be completely hard. Just firm enough that when you push your finger into it, the dent stays.
- Add in your favorite essential oils. Because you want to keep the smell of essential oil, add them when the mixture has cooled.

- Add the arrowroot powder and whip the butter using a stand mixer or hand held mixer. I used my Kitchenaid stand mixer for this purpose, for the reason that it can whip faster without my help.
- Because I want to avoid waste, I store them in sterilized up cycled glass jars.

HOW LONG CAN I STORE HOMEMADE WHIPPED BODY BUTTER
You can store them un-refrigerated between 3 to 6 months. Some of the Body butter recipes use aloevera gel for the simple reason of getting a less greasy body butter. Because of the aloevera gel you will need to store in the fridge.
CAN YOU SKIP THE ARROW ROOT POWDER ?
Yes, but expect to have a greasy after feel on your skin. I personally don’t like any lotion to be very greasy, so I used arrow root powder.
